Supercell

Supercell

A supercell is a thunderstorm that is characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft. Of the four classifications of thunderstorms (supercell, squall line, multi-cell, and single-cell), supercells are the overall least common and have the potential to be the most severe.

This photo was taken of a supercell that formed over Wyoming 18/05/2014. The link on the photo takes you to a time-lapse video someone has taken of the supercell.
